Question 1

How does Hamlet's perception of his mother affect his behavior or attitude toward Ophelia?  Does Hamlet really love Ophelia?  If so, why is he cruel to her?

Question 2

Hamlet sits on his decision to kill Claudius.  What are the reasons for his hesitation? How valid are they and what might they suggest about Hamlet's character?

Question 3

Hamlet claims that his madness is feigned, an "antic disposition" which he puts on for his own purposes.  Why would Hamlet want to feign madness?  How can an appearance of insanity help him achieve his ends?  Is he really sane throughout the play, or does he ever cross the line into madness?

Since the play is centered on doubles, keep in mind how Hamlet's madness is set against Ophelia's and the meaning that unfolds.

Question 4

This question refers to the assigned podcast lecture. Dr. Emma Smith argues in her lecture against the dominant critical model that Hamlet is a representation of modern man, and instead a deeply nostalgic play about the past.  What elements of her argument stand out to you as convincing?  Why?

Question 5

Discuss one point from Dr. Emma Smith's lecture that you found important, confusing, or otherwise noteworthy.  Explain and discuss with comments to peers.

Question 6

Hamlet is a play in which nothing can be taken at face value:  appearances are frequently deceptive, and many characters engage in play-acting, spying, and pretense. What deliberate attempts are made at deception and to what extent are they successful?  (Note references to appearances, disguises, pretense, seeming, masks, acting, etc.)

Question 7

What is the larger meaning of Hamlet?  That is, after reading the play, what is Shakespeare saying to us?  Is this a play about politics, about religion, about action?
