ENG 215

How did Pit bulls get such a bad rap?

The question for the day is how did pit bulls get a bad rap? Who is really the monster the dog or human? There is a need lesser restriction because banning a breed is like human racial discrimination. Pit bulls are viewed as overly dangerous, but are abused by humans. When we trace the pit bull's ancestor, the Staffordshire terrier. There are studies that show they make excellent service dogs for the disabled. Any breed of an animal can be made to be vicious. Dobermans, German Sheppard’s and Rottweilers. These are all beautiful animals that are and can be expensive. So is it the dog or the owner that establishes this behavior.

I was surprised to learn that pit bulls used to be America’s darlings. There is even some blurring over exactly which breed of dog is a pit bull — the definition includes the American pit bull terrier, the Staffordshire terrier and, at times, the bulldog. This blurring seems to have dogged the breed from the beginning, as there is some disagreement over the origin of pit bulls.

The history of this issue is, pit bulls began during antiquity as the so-called Molossus, a now-extinct breed that was used by the Greeks as shepherds and guard dogs. In times of war, they marched off to battle with their humans. Eventually, so the theory goes, the Molossus made it to early Britain, where it became known as the Mastiff. In the first century CE, Rome discovered the breed after defeating the Britons, and the dogs spread all over the empire. For the next four hundred years, they were used as war dogs, and intermixed with various local breeds all over the European continent, becoming the forerunners of the modern pit bull. (Bastain)

Dogs are animals and until they learn to speak our language, we will continue to hear about these "sudden" dog attacks. However, most of these attacks are hardly spontaneous to someone well versed in dog behavior. Most dog owners are not even aware that a wagging tail is not always a good sign and can be the first indication of a fight or attack. In the defense for all animals, the state or local government should enact different laws regarding certain animals (e.g., pit bulls). Across different states, the laws change and it has proven that the law varies from state to state. I selected this topic to proves the state with Cincinnati's (Coolidge, 2015) City Councils are considering makes changes to animal control laws that would align city law more closely with state law and remove a registration requirement only for owners of pit bulls. According to city officials, 17 people have signed up to speak about "breed-specific legislation." (Herzog,2015) When this is enforces statewide there will be a change.

The first advantage is when addressing dangerous dogs could be a drawback that has mislead communities for ages, leading a number of them to resort to passing laws forbidding certain breeds particularly susceptible to dangerous behavior, sometimes when a well–publicized attack on a person. In fact, a representative for the KCK Kennels where a dog was held said the ban is there to protect people, adding that a pit bull had attacked and killed a senior citizen about a year before the dog was seized. These efforts to eliminate certain breeds are perhaps the easiest ways to attempt to control the probability of an attack by simply reducing the mere presence of certain types of dogs in a community. Other communities hold the owners responsible without completely banning the breeds.

The second advantage is the myth that Pit Bulls can cause more damage than other dogs.Myths such as the locked jaw have been disproved but a Pit Bull's traits make him naturally more driven. Knowing that they fight with tenacity until death in death in rings, gameness, prey drive, a compact, strong, muscular body (pits can pull up to 7,000 pounds) and centuries of fighting instinct. Nevertheless, there are too many factors involved in dog bites, such as the size of the animal and where the bite occurred, to make a blanket statement. In their favor, a Pit Bull will likely listen and obey better than other dogs if properly trained.

The third advantage is Pit Bulls can be rehabilitated - This was disproved by the Michael Vick case where some 50 pit bulls were rescued from a fighting ring. Of those, 49 dogs were rehabilitated. Some went to shelters such as Best Friends and many are well-loved family members today. The testing used to determine these dogs' ability to fit into society was exhaustive, excellent, and successful. Pit bulls are very intelligent, strong dogs that want nothing more than to please their owner. So how is it their fault that in order to please their owner they have to be aggressive? It is the owners that we should seek out and punish, not the dogs. Chances are if a person is engaging in training dogs to fight, they are also participating in other unlawful acts. We should focus our resources on catching and punishing those propelling dog fighting and try to rehabilitate Pit bulls.

Pit Bulls were bred to kill, but whose fault is that? The fault of humanity. Stop humans from doing bad things to the dogs and most of the problems will be gone.

Nevertheless, if they have no place in society, then why did we breed them in the first place? If they are so bad, then what made us begin a vicious breed? I do not believe that all Pit Bulls are vicious by the way. Some of the sweetest dogs I know are Pit Bulls. The vicious Pit Bull stereotype has gone too far and newsflash: not all stereotypes are true.

If we want to put an end to this lets make it mandatory to educate and train owners on certain breed types. If your dog snarls or curls their lip at someone, address it immediately. If your dog becomes possessive of you, food or toys, address it immediately. If you do not know how then find a trainer that can help you. All dog owners need to know what the warning signs of aggression are. All dogs deserve to be treated fairly and humane by responsible owners. Ignorance and stupidity by the owners are what causes any dog to become mean and aggressive! You must punish the deed not the breed!
