Pros and Cons of Disciplines: Disciplines have survived for so long in the academic world because they serve the very useful function of constraining what the researcher has to think about. They set a boundary on the parameters of interest (what to include and what to leave out) and dictate the range of methodological approaches that are relevant. But, they also pre-determine to a large extent what the outcomes of the research will be and they type of questions that get asked.
Goal: The goal of interdisciplinary research and writing is to produce new understanding. There are several ways to do this, but each involves applying the methodology and insights of one discipline to the field of inquiry of another to encourage a new way of thinking about a problem. The goal of interdisciplinary research is to produce new ways of approaching questions.
Thesis statement that combines insights from both disciplines.

10. New Paragraph/ Conclusion. Produce an interdisciplinary understanding of the problem and test it: Does it make sense? Does it create a new, useful understanding of the problem? What are the stakes of this approach: How does this give us a broader picture of a topic? A more complete understanding? A more comprehensive solution. Who is helped by this new approach?
