Database Environment Paper

profilechalot6

First, you must choose a database environment from the following choices:

  • A college that needs to track courses, course sections, and professors teach the sections in order to publish a course schedule
  • A retail business that needs to track store locations, shifts, and the employees assigned to each shift
  • An appropriate database environment within your workplace (must be approved by your instructor - send me a one-paragraph email describing the environment and its purpose)

You may NOT use examples involving:

  • An art museum that needs to track artists, artwork, and locations
  • A consulting organization that needs to track staff, skill sets, and projects

Once you have chosen your database environment, write a 750- to 1,050-word paper in which you address these elements:

  • Analyze the database environment, including its objectives (why will it be built?), its boundaries (what is in and out of scope?), its constraints (what rules must it follow?), and any challenges that will accompany its construction.
  • Describe at least 3 entities (which will eventually become tables in a database)
  • List attributes for each of these entities

Note that the database environment chosen will be used to build a working database in your individual assignments for weeks 3 and 4. You are only required to create three entities, which would be a very small database. As such, you'll want to choose a very focused business problem or process. You will need to look at only a slice of an organization - don't feel as though you have to model an entire business.

The part where you describe the entities and attributes is the most important, as it will be the basis for future assignments. Each entity should correspond to some thing you are trying to describe, and will become a table in the database you create in weeks 3 and 4. The attributes are the descriptive properties of the entity, and will become the columns in your tables.

Below is an example of describing three entities and their attributes. Remember that you are not allowed to use this particular topic for your assignment, but it will give you a feel for what is required.

An art gallery wants to create a database to track works of art in their collection. They will track information about artists, the pieces of art they create, and the locations in which these artworks are kept.

For each piece of art, they want to capture a unique identification number, the name of the piece, the medium used to create it, and the date the work was acquired. Every piece of art will be linked to a single artist.

For each artist, they want to track an artist identification number, full name, birthdate, and home country. An artist can create multiple works.

Each piece of art will be kept in some location within the museum. We will only record the current location. For each location, we want to track the location name (which uniquely identifies the location), whether the location is open t the  location. Multiple pieces of art can share the same location.
