Data Retrieval

Part 1:

Discuss why SQL is the preferred method of data retrieval in a database management system.

Part 2: Respond to two peer discusions

Peer 1 Bill

SQL, structure query language, was introduced to Database Management Systems in the late 1970s as Oracle. One of the reasons that SQL is preferred is because of its legacy and its most important aspect of the language is communicating with relational databases. In the earlier days, it was a race to improve databases management software as data requirements evolved. As systems in these days were more of a flat database, it was only time that made them to become more revolutionary as to require a need to navigate in a more multi-dimensional mean. SQL is able to support and manipulate databases that is comprised of large amounts of data.

Peer 2 Ted

SQL is the preferred method because when the DBM draft the SQL statement he/she can give step by step introduction as to which table or tables to look for, what attributes to retrieve from the table, and which rows on the table or table to look at as well. Plus the SQL keywords work across various platforms such as, MS Access, Oracle, MySQL Workbench, SQL Server, etc. By using SQL you cut down on the processing and the latency of your database, because you tell it exactly where to look instead of your software going through every row one at a time. This would be cumbersome if your database holds millions of records. Also, if you use a SQL query a lot you can save that query for future use so you don’t have to keep creating it for certain users.
