For an example event: (NOT a Cold War event)

Event: Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

Summary: Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by the Black Hand while visiting Sarajevo to inspect Austro-Hungarian troops. The Black Hand was a Slavic nationalist group who used terrorism as a tactic to achieve independence for Sarajevo. Archduke Ferdinand was the nephew of Emperor Franz Joseph, and heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Context: The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand led, in very short order, to the July Ultimatum from Austria-Hungary to Serbia. Without the system of alliances, militarism, nationalism, imperialism, and industrialization that existed at the time, this ultimatum may have been of little import, unfortunately though, alliances and the like did exist. Prior to the assassination of Ferdinand in 1914, a complex web of alliances was created, partially by Otto von Bismarck, between the major powers of Europe at the time, Russia, Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, Britain, France, and Italy, along with some of the lesser powers. This web of alliances contributed to tensions between the states, but so did the development of mass industrialization and the technological developments it brought about in military weaponry. Ultimately, through the combination of all these serious factors and the assassination of Ferdinand, war broke out in Europe that would lead to the First World War and deaths of millions of humans around the world.
