Guided Response: Review at least two of your classmates’ posts and extend their learning by challenging their responses. Challenge your classmates by asking a question that may cause them to reevaluate or confirm their belief and understanding. Or you may offer additional information that may confirm their belief and provide them words of encouragement.

Before taking this course I had no idea what neuroplasticity was. During this course I feel as though I have learned a lot about how the brain works and is stimulated when being engaged. Brain development is different in every student and person as well as how an individual may learn. Children learn at different rates and also learn in different ways. It is our job as an educator to find out the best way that each student learns and how to engage students so that his or her brain is actively working and engaged so that he or she is learning to the best of his or her ability.

The traditional education system today teaches kids more toward taking a test. It does not allow children to think or use his or her own ideas. It wants to focus more on what the educational system wants him or her to know and not what the child knows or is learning. It appears to me that they are only interested in the numbers that kids are putting up for these state and national tests. When I was growing up we were allowed to express ourselves and be creative. Sadly the whole educational system has changed. We push more for kids to conform and learn and become way ahead of what their young years are and want them to be far more advanced than what he or she should be. If your child does think outside of the norm the educational system will put that child into a gifted system or if your child is more advanced that child falls by the wayside because educators are pushed to keep on those kids who are not up to par and numbers are behind. In my opinion the system is failing educators and children in a sense.

Evaluating a learning based on his or her cognitive function and learning differences is important. Many students do not learn the same way as one another. Some may need more one on one help to understand material or some may need a different approach to explaining the material so that he or she understand it. Other children may need interventions because he or she may have a cognitive delay that affects his or her learning. As an educator it is our job to look for these things and to assist our students in finding the best way to assist in helping him or her succeed.

Course Reflection

Learning about neuroplasticity has given me a better understanding of brain development.  I now know that it is important to teach children that they can “grow their brain.”  I think it important for teachers to see each student as an individual with their own learning capabilities and capacities.  Some students are seen in a certain learning profile, but understanding that all students can learn if they are in the right way for them is eye opening.

The traditional educational system does not really teach children to think, it teaches them how to answer.  However I think the education system is changing more toward teaching students how to think critically and explain their answers.  My daughter’s school does not use fill in the blank books any more, students are asked to explain why they think what they think and how they came up with answers.  This is teaching students to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of what they are learning.

Knowing the basic idea of how the brain functions and in particular the reticular activating system and attention helps me to look at each student and learn how to acquire their attention.  Seeing that each learner’s brain has the same capacity for learning with the right activation shows me that all students have the same potential as long as they are engaged and interested in the learning.  I will now find connections and scaffold learning appropriately for each student.  Cognitive processes follow the same route, but ensuring each student is following the learning will be the challenge.  I am excited to look at each student and find what will engage them and see how they will interpret what they are learning.
