Virtual Tour
Project due via Turn-It-In on Monday, November 18..
Find an online or video plant tour that interests you, or choose one of the virtual plant tours listed
at this website: http://manufacturing.stanford.edu/onlinetours.html
Take the online tour and complete the following questions:
1. What company did you tour?

2. What were the (low value) inputs, briefly describe the transformation process, and
describe the (high value) outputs. (Ch 1)

3. Would you judge the company to be a Product Innovator or Product Imitator? Describe
the factors that led you to reach this conclusion. (Ch 2)

4. How would you describe the process: Continuous, Assembly Line, Batch, Job Shop or
Project? Describe why you picked this. What process characteristics did you observe
that led you to this conclusion? (Ch 4 – 5)

5. Using the ‘Insert’ ‘Shapes’ function on MS Word, draw a high-level process flow chart
(approx. 10-15 steps) for the production process (Ch 6)

6. What was the most interesting part of the online tour?
7. What surprised you about the process, product or company?
8. Include any closing conclusions you may have.

General Requirements:

A. While you will not be held to a particular number of pages, I anticipate approximately 6-8
written pages of well thought out material. Process flow charts and other visual tools will
make up a major portion of this project.

B. Where applicable, cite all resources (APA or MLA style)! You will be penalized for
not citing others’ writings or concepts—whether you quote them directly or
summarize. Note as well that much of this paper is based on your own direct
observation and interpretation.
C. All papers must be single-sided and double-spaced. Include a cover page and staple in
the top, left corner. No covers, binding or folders.

D. Project is due on the first reading day. Monday November 18 at NOON is the deadline.
One letter grade will be deducted for each day late. A zero (-0-) will be assigned if not
received before the final exam.
