Because we seem to share the desire to vanquish our enemies, revenge is sometimes called sweet. But is revenge sweet? When the person who has suffered unfair treatment finally triumphs, we often applaud him or her. And we ourselves cannot help but feel a twinge of joy when the court finally forces that unscrupulous car dealer to pay us back the money he unjustly took from us and to offer an apology. But is revenge always sweet? Situations often are not as simple and clear-cut as they appear on the surface. Read the stories “Spanish Roulette,” by Ed Vega (page 499), and the poem “Bully,” by Martín Espada (page 510), and then write an extended definition of the word revenge. In your extended definition, you might include examples from history, literature, and personal experience, but also be sure to focus on the conflicts this impulse for revenge creates in people.
