Imagine you are a management consultant. You have been hired by the company you chose at the beginning of the session to analyze their communications and leadership. You have been asked to submit a final report to the executive team with your findings including the following:

  1. A description of the company’s communication structure and identify ways that culture has influenced the structure.
  2. A discussion of the barriers to communication that may arise when leading diverse teams. Identify specific methods for overcoming those barriers and develop a high performing team.
  3. An analysis of the various leadership styles and different types of leaders.

Helpful Hint: Review your chapter on managing communications (Daft, chapter 17.) When assessing an organizations communication structure consider factors such as channels used, use of communications in persuading or influencing others (leadership), cultural/gender differences, etc. Review your company sources of information from your research. Ask yourself what indications are there that tell me about what factors of communications might be taking place at this company? Do not look for the answers. They are not there. 

This is an exercise in critical thinking which means you will connect the dots between your key reading material related to COMMUNICATION STRUCTURE and information from your company research which might give you an indication of what kind of structure and then make an educated assumption based on “connecting the dots” or your critical thinking. One way to approach this is starting your statement with ________(blank – insert research info) _____ suggests there is an extensive communication structure which included _________(blank look to incorporate vocabulary here)__________ . (Then cite your source.) 40

This week, culture IS referring to the cultural differences between employees (Not the organizational culture) 

Helpful Hint: This is an academic question which requires you only to review academically accurate information about the barriers to communications and ways leaders can overcome those barriers. Your text is a great source for this (chapter 13). However, the library (doesn’t have to be pertaining to your company) will have some great sources of information on this. Some good internet sources are available out there but remember to use those that are academically sound and are not paper mill material or other “I’ll answer your questions” internet sites. NOT! If there is anything you have read to date while researching your company that would be appropriate to place here, great ! Once again, when applying concepts to your company, remember you are unlikely going to find the answer unless your textbook highlights your particular company with this concept. Just like with communication structure above, you need to connect those dots or use your critical thinking. 40

Helpful Hint: You will want to show you know the different styles of leadership taught in this class. To do so, be sure to review Chapter 15. Those of you who selected Kimberly-Clark as a company got a break here  Then look to the library for information on your leaders at your company. BTW – the library contains magazines like Forbes, WSJ, etc… so if you tell me you cannot find anything… well…. you need to reconsider. I promise there is plenty of information on your company and if you want a private 5 minute search lesson, call me. In summary, you need to talk about the different styles or types of leaders and then make some good educated guesses as to what styles the leaders are in your company. Choose one or two leaders, it does not matter. What matters is HOW you defend your answer. Is it based on a good transfer of academically sound knowledge (CRITICAL THINKING) 40

Helpful Hint: What impacts trust? Your chapter on leadership will tell you what the academically credible research says. THAT is information you want to use. OK, then HOW do I figure out the level of trust in my company? By now you have figured out that is for you to make some educated assumptions to develop an answer? What have you read in your company research which might give you an indication the level is high or the level might be low. Focus on that. Mention it and state that is why you think it is low or high. It’s all about looking to make those connections again. (CRITICAL THINKING ) 40

Helpful Hint: Use the same approach in this as you have with the information above. Getting better at connecting the dots? Having trouble connecting the dots? It is not always easy!
