Analysis Paper

profileMDNAQ

Read Singer's article, linked above, then write an analysis.

You should first identify the overall thesis: what is Singer trying to tell the readers? Consider the arguments and the devices used to present them, and discuss whether they are sound and well-supported. Is the discussion objective, or is there evidence of bias? Overall, do you think Singer makes a valid statement?

In your analysis you will probably look at logos, ethos and pathos – i.e., logic and reasoning, ethical questions, emotional appeals – with regard to the choice of anecdotes and examples, the style (formal or conversational), use of facts and statistics, use of rhetorical devices - imagery, irony, repetition, etc. Does the writer generalize or exaggerate? Does he discuss any counter-arguments?

You should support your answer with quotations and details. You will need to select what you think is the most relevant material; you may not be able to include every aspect of it.
