activity 9.3

In this exercise you will demonstrate and discuss how a project schedule supports project procurement tools. Follow these steps in order:

  1. Go to GanttProject, a free desktop tool for project scheduling
  2. Download and install GanttProject
  3. Open GanttProject (you should see a blank Gantt chart)
  4. Using the “Tasks” pull-down menu (or the clock icon), create a new task.
  5. Name the task by typing in “Project Start”
  6. Add additional tasks for the following, in order
    1. Design Airplane
    2. Prototype Airplane
    3. Release Drawings
    4. Procure 20 Airplanes
    5. Certify Airplanes Operational
    6. Close Project
  7. Highlight all 7 tasks and click on the “create dependencies…” chain link icon just above the tasks
  8. Highlight only the first item, “Project Start,” and click on the information icon at top (“i” in a circle)
  9. Make sure the task duration is 1 day.
  10. Repeat setting task durations for each task. (There is no right answer for durations. Use your judgment; this is called estimating).
  11. In order to have the project start one month from now, open the information icon for the “Project Start” task and set the “Begin Date” to one month from now.
  12. Save the project and “export” it to PDF.
  13. Create a word document as a letter to your procurement team. Write a paragraph explaining that you need to order airplanes and identify the start and finish dates for the procurement. Insert the Gantt chart PDF you just created.
  14. In the discussion board area, attach this document and discuss a concept from this exercise that stands out to you as most revealing.
