Buddhism brings up an interesting question. Does something as important as religious truth vary from person to person? Should we find the truth ourselves, or do we need the wisdom and experience of those who have gone before us?
Writer 1:
I believe that much like with school and different types of education, people learn differently and should embrace religious truths at their own pace. That said, it is the different types of lessons passed down from those who have gone before us that give us a solid foundation and morals. Seeing each person as someone who needs to arrive at his/her own truth individually seems counterproductive in religion since each person starts at different points and arrives at different conclusions. People would be unable to argue about ultimate truth because there would be no such thing since personal truths are subjective. Nobody would be able to be objective so there would be no truth. Furthermore, the teachings of those who have come before us are important because they offer a starting point further along than what we would have without that guidance. I do think that it would be beneficial to be exposed to many religions rather than one so one could grow in faith learning many lessons and picking certain ones to identify with as there are different methods of creed, code, and community for each. Once someone has exposure to different ideologies I believe they are more capable of finding their own truth with guidance rather than starting on their own.
Writer 2:
I believe religious truth does vary from person to person because religious truth is what you perceive and when you per say reach enlightenment. What I interpret from the Bible or the Koran may be different from what my husband may interpret and I may reach a sense of enlightenment at a different age than others. I believe that we should seek our own religious truth because at the end of the day it is your own interpretation. It is okay to seek guidance and maybe a different perspective of what you are reading but we all have our own path in life to walk. We always look to our elders for guidance and try to learn from the mistakes of the past to make sure that we do not follow down that same road but in the end we have to seek and find our own way.
