tifwilCongratulations on completing your 500-600 word Unit II Research Proposal on your selected subject, Tiffany, and keep working on clarifying your opposition/audience, their reasons for holding a different position, AND your “call to action.”
Please check out the below resources, particularly President Obama’s “Lilly Ledbetter” legislation, and this statement: “The President continues to advocate for passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act, common sense legislation that would give women additional tools to fight pay discrimination.”
SO . . . Tiffany, I urge you to research the “Paycheck Fairness Act” and argue for or against it, so your US Senators would be your target, perhaps whoever represents your state of Colorado!

Review also the “Research Requirements” posted in “Ask the Professor” for your next unit’s “Annotated Bibliography,” which must include at least five (5) authoritative research sources no older than 5-7 years to support your argument.
As indicated in your instructions in your “Syllabus” in your course in Blackboard, your assignment was graded subject to your proposal meeting the following requirements:
- Cover page and APA formatting 20/20
- Purpose Statement 14/20 – purpose must be to persuade a recognizable opposing audience (who is?) to take a clear course of action, to “argue,” so review pp. 313 and 328 of Lester text, and identify more clearly opposition and profession or position of opposition, and reasoning.
Statement of Qualifications 20/20
- Tentative Argument 14/20 – promising, and mainly needs work on identifying clear opposition and/or reasons for their opposing your call to action (which is still too vague), so keep working on identifying with your opposition and their reasoning as well as your own reasoning behind the position/action you advocate (which is?), supported, of course, by authoritative research.
- *APA citation of one (1) scholarly article 20/20 – source/s cited mostly meet APA style guidelines, and always consult your CSU APA Guide for further guidance.
*NOTE #1: “Research Requirements” & “Library Research Instructions” are located in “Ask the Professor.”
*NOTE #2: You must provide five (5) published authoritative resources that directly relate to your argument (which needs clarification) and THEN you may supplement with personal interviews and/or other resources.
Total Score: 88/100 = B+
I can tell you worked hard on your purpose statement, statement of qualifications, and tentative argument, and you may wish to review p. 313 of your textbook, Strategies for Writing Successful Research Papers, where you are informed your proposal says to the reader, “We should do something.” Continue working on making clear your audience and their reasons for opposing your argument for action as you respectfully prove how your position is the stronger one.
Review p. 16 of your Little, Brown Compact Handbook (LBCH) as you continue revising, and apply the “Checklist for revising the thesis statement,” analyzing the “significance” of your claim, how it can be “limited” and “made more specific” and avoid a “so what” response (Aaron, 2010, p. 16).
To help you with thesis development, visit the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) handout on “Developing Strong Thesis Statements”: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/588/01/.
Review also “Thesis” on p. 328 of your text, Strategies for Writing Successful Research Papers, and keep refining what you are trying to prove and/or how you are trying to persuade your audience to do something.
FYI, the Purdue OWL also is an excellent resource for APA guidelines and for working on your “Logic in Argumentative Writing”: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/659/1/
As you’ve learned, when engaging in academic writing you determine the purpose and analyze the audience, and you use academic language, which exhibits several common features mentioned in the LBCH Chapter 10 on p. 95.
Understanding the basics for writing a research paper will certainly help you to become a solid writer. Keep up your hard work and email me if you have questions. Dr. KNB
