Phys Geog Exam 2 (Ch 5-8) – By signing or printing my name above I acknowledge that I did not seek or use help from any person . For full credit, exams are to be delivered to Blackboard assignment dropbox (select title > Attach > Submit) before 11:59:00 PM, Tuesday Nov 4, 2013. NO CREDIT for late exams.
1. Use the globe below (or a similar figure) to show, for each 30o latitudinal zone:
a) Show surficial wind patterns (blowing along Earth’s surface) if there were no Coriois effect (6 pts)
b) Show wind patterns as they actually exist due to the Coriolis effect (6 pts)

2. Explain why low pressure and warm temperature at the Equator lead to high precipitation. (4 pts)
Low weight zones structure when an airmass warms, either from being over a warm land or sea surface, or from being warmed by buildup of water vapor in extensive rain or snow frameworks. The warming causes the air layer to extend upward, getting to be somewhat thicker. This development then causes air in the upper troposphere to stream away, leaving less mass, along these lines less (weight) at the surface. The lower weight air at the surface then causes higher weight air around it to stream to lower weight, this coupled with hot environment causes more precipitation in equatorial area
3. Air masses are developing over the geographic regions below. Classify them as cT, mP, mT,or cP. (4 pts)
a.) Gulf of Mexico cT
b.) offshore Seattle, WA (North Pacific Ocean) cP
c.) Alberta, Canada mT
d.) Albuquerque, NM mP
4. Is there a difference in physical state between H2O existing as water vapor and H2O existing in a cloud? Please explain your reasoning. (5 pts)
There is no physical difference between water existing as water vapor and the water existing in a cloud since in both cases the water state is gaseous.

5. Use the saturation line diagram below to answer several questions. Show your work for full credit.
1. An air mass has a temperature of 70oF. It currently contains 12 grams of water vapor per m3. What is the relative humidity of this air mass? (5 pts) Relative humidity =partial pressure/given temperature= (0.012kg/70)x 100 =0.017 %
1. What would the relative humidity of this air mass be if its temperature were increased to 100o F? (5 pts) (0.012kg/100)x 100 =0.012%
1. What is the current dew point of this air mass? (5pts) Dewpoint is a measure of environmental dampness. It is the temperature to which air must be cooled keeping in mind the end goal to achieve immersion. A higher dew point demonstrates more dampness present circulating everywhere. It is now and then alluded to as Dew Point Temperature.
1. Overnight, the temperature is expected to drop to freezing (32oF). How much water vapor (in g/m3) do you expect to change into water? (5 pts) 32/70 x 12=5.48g/m3
6. Following is a partially-completed, quasi-3D diagram that shows a low pressure and high pressure system in the Southern Hemisphere. The arrows represent direction of wind flow on the ground surface
a. (3 pts) Which system would produce low pressure?
b. (3 pts) Which system would produce high pressure?
c. (4 pts) Draw or indicate the direction of vertical airflow in each system

7. Using the sketch map of the United States below, please do the following:
a. (5 pts) Draw or indicate the approximate location of “Tornado Alley”.
b. (5 pts) Draw (or insert) a cross-sectional view through the cold front along the line A-A’ , including related clouds and airflow patterns
c. (5 pts) Using the cross-section from b., explain why so many tornadoes form here.

8. Hurricane “Sunny” is approaching the New Jersey shore. Draw how the ocean surface will become distorted by the low pressure of the hurricane as it moves ashore. Once the hurricane comes ashore, what will be the single biggest danger to the residents? (hint – look back just 2 years!) (5 pts)

9. The ancient Greeks subdivided the climate of the world into 5 zones. We have taken this classification and modified it slightly for more modern usage.
a. Draw (or use a figure to show) the 5-zone Greek system on the LH globe (5 pts)
b. Show a simplified modern system on the RH globe that evolved from the Greeks (5 pts)
Make sure you clearly label the diagrams for full credit.
a. Greeks b. Modern

c. Describe how the modern system uses temperature and precipitation data to subdivide and improve upon the Greek system in the Tropics and in Temperate climates. Be brief but specific (5 pts).
10. Your instructor has no idea what to wear when he goes to Tucson, AZ this summer. He asks you to 1) draw a climograph that would be representative of the annual climate there, and 2) name the climate zone. (10 pts)
