Solution: x=2, y=-1 -- see attached plot

Take the second equation and solve it for x:
y = x - 3 <=> x = y + 3

Now put your solution into the first equation instead of x:
y = 4 x - 9 = 4 (y + 3) - 9 = 4 y + 12 - 9 = 4 y + 3

Solve y = 4 y + 3 for y:

y = 4 y + 3 <=> -3 y = 3 <=> y = -3/3 = -1

Now use y = -1 in x = y + 3:

x = y + 3 = x = -1 + 3 = 2
