Choose one type of person from Ancient Greece (for example: a soldier, hetairi, priestess, wife, shepherd, slave) and write a first or third person narrative, in at least 300 words, about the person’s life, surroundings, and what they would most likely be wearing.  If you choose to write in the first person it can be similar to a diary entry, and can be about just one day or even just a few moments in time.  One approach could be to choose an actual historical event and write a fictional account about that.  In writing your story, include the following elements:

  • Identify time period the story takes place—choose a specific year, and be sure that your clothing descriptions match with the current styles of that exact time.
  • Describe the apparel in detail, using period terminology, and including garment construction, silhouettes, fabrics, and accessories of the main character and at least one other character that enters the story.
  • Include some description of the scenery and architecture, and an image of architecture constructed during the time period to illustrate.
  • with the image illustrate the clothing styles discussed in the story

Research:  Use the textbook and lectures as your main sources of information about the styles of the Ancient Greeks and when they were worn.  Research online for more information about historical events and the lives of Ancient Greeks.  Here is one good place to start: http://www.pbs.org/empires/thegreeks/htmlver/
The Met Museum's Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History is one great resource for images of artwork from the time period: http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/ht/?period=04&region=eusb#/Works-of-Art
