Background: In this class, we’ve been discussing unconventional texts, conventional

practices, and using practical wisdom to decipher when it is appropriate to break conventions.

For your first essay, you had to define and discuss a written genre that you believe is not

useful or not used frequently in the university. For this essay, then, you will use your peers’

perspectives as well as your own to decide whether or not graphic novels (as a form of

writing) have a place in the university.

Assignment: Conduct a small study to discover how college students outside our class view

graphic novels. Then select an idea, theme, or minute detail related to WWII that you learned

about by reading Maus, and write a critical response in which you use your peers’ survey

responses and your own practical wisdom to decide whether or not this graphic novel is useful

to the university.

Requirements:

● 35 pages, typed, MLA page formatting and citations; you must include

summary, quotation, and paraphrase techniques to incorporate your survey

results, your formal research, and Maus.

● You must write a sample survey focused on university students close to your age and

use the data gathered to help you understand and present others’ perspectives.

● Your survey results should be attached to your final paper. For the best results, collect

a minimum of 1520 responses to your survey.

● You should also include at least 2 new vocabulary words in your paper.

Due Dates:

11/4: Survey Question workshop in class: Think about what information you’d like to know

more about in regards to university students’ perspectives of graphic novels, and bring 4

questions that you wish to use in your survey (8 points)
