Professional Dilemma and Value Conflicts

Describe the experience

What was the ethical issue did you experience?

The ethical issue I first experience in university is the issue of engaging in drinking and sexual behavior with friends. This is the first time when I was exposed to the environment as emphasized by Adler et al. (1962) with a lot of freedom. And I was to decide on my own what to do and what to avoid.

Who was involved?

Johnny and Freddy were involved in this as they were the one who wanted to introduce me to drinking and sexual behavior in the campus. They seem to be used to the behavior though we had just met in the campus, and I did not know their background.

What was the relationship to the other parties?

Both Johnny and Freddy were my roommates in campus. Johnny doubles up as my course mate though we came from different regions and different tribes. They were general just friends that we met in the campus.

Analyze the dilemma

Was there difference in power and authority? Explain

There was no much difference in power and authority amongst us though Johnny was our class representative and thus may have had undue influence on me.  I found him to be trustworthy as our boss and could depend on his decisions since he had some authority as a class representative.

What was the ethics in question?

The ethical value in question was to engage in drinking and partying and sexual behavior with my friends, which are Johnny and Freddy, who seem to be obsessed with these behaviors. Moral virtues were under threat in this case, and I was to decide on the right path to take. My personal behavior, virtues and norms were under threat since I was brought up in a Christian family were bible teachings were strictly adhered to.

What personal values were in conflict?

The personal values that were in conflict in this case were whether to accept and succumb to drinking and early sexual behavior or lead a life free of drinking. Moral virtues were in conflict with moral vices. In our society engaging in sex before marriage is considered a taboo and thus engaging in these behaviors conflicted with the society’s norm.

What were the potential outcomes?

The potential outcomes of these behaviors were to be a drug addict and may be infected with sexually transmitted infections. Another potential outcome was to fail in class due to taking a lot of time in those behaviors and remaining with less time for studies, and this may have eventually led to discontinuation. Paulson (2007) says the behavior can lead to early pregnancies and abortion cases. Suffering from diseases that are involved with excessive drinking of alcohol would be another outcome.

What were the potential consequences to you and other parties?

Reid (1963) points out that a possible consequence of this is the lack of focus and direction in life. We could also have dropped in campus and join criminal gangs. It could have led to discouragement on the part of the parents and lack trust in us. It also leads to deformation of personal character and loss of personal dignity and respect by others.

Evaluate the outcome

What was the outcome?

I never accepted them to influence me to join them in such behaviors. I stood on my values of rejected their plans in my life. The outcome was that I passed in my studies since I was focused and avoided taking my precious time in behaviors that are undesirable in the society.

What was the consequence to you and other parties involved?

I lost my friendship with them since I never accepted to engage in drinking and sexual behaviors like they did. They boycotted many of the classes and thus did not pass well in their studies. They were lucky since they were never rusticated from campus.

Based on what you have learnt since you began in university of phoenix and your continuing work experience, would you handle the situation differently or the same way? Explain.

Based on my experience at the university and general life experience on various situations, I will handle the matters differently according to the impact, outcomes and consequences that they will have on my life. If it’s a behavior that will have a positive impact, desired outcome and positive consequences, I will welcome the behavior. I will avoid if it has a negative impact, undesirable outcome and negative consequences in my life.
