Benchmark Assessment
Individual: Making Friends with Phonemes Using Environmental Text (Benchmark Assessment)
1) Research the effectiveness of using environmental text to enhance phonemic awareness in emergent readers. Use the GCU eLibrary to identify a minimum of five peer-reviewed scholarly articles and review the following Web site: http://www.sharonmacdonald.com/environmental-print.aspx to support your efforts.

2) Create two environmental print scavenger hunts looking for opportunities to identify and use phonemes, one for preschoolers and one for first graders. Ensure that you select bias-free, culturally relevant environmental text for your hunts. Decide appropriate sources for the environmental print for the hunts.

3) Create an invitation for the children’s parents to accompany them on the hunts. Be creative. In your invitation, explain how and why the hunts will benefit their children.

4) Present your hunts and the invitations in a 15-18 slide Power Point presentation, not including title and reference slides. Use the Notes section of the slides to present the narrative that would accompany the hunts and their research support
